Camera Flash
A great way to fix your lighting problems is by using automatic flash. However, you need to use flash carefully or you can create some problems. This is why, before you buy a used camera, you need to have a good understanding of what the camera flash does, how it works, why you need it, and how to buy it for your camera type.
Most digital cameras come with an automatic flash, as well as different settings for the flash that you can use in a variety of light conditions. You can set the flash to work automatically when there is too little light or you can use other settings so that you get more control over the type of flash you want.
Camera flashes are integrated within the frame of the camera. This convenience allows you to shoot your camera while at the same time allowing the flash to be activated when needed. However, there are some problems that can come up between the lens and the flash.
Red eye is the most common problem. We have all seen this. People in your photos (and animals as well) will have strange glowing eyes. Red eye is caused when the light of the flash reflects back from the eye's retina. It's the red blood vessels in the eyes that cause red eye.
Some digital cameras will have a flash setting that will lessen red eye. This setting works by sending out a quick flash just before the photo is taken. This short flash will cause the eye's iris to become smaller.
Integrated flash in your digital camera can also cause a lack of depth in your pictures. This problem occurs when there is even illumination across the object that you are photographing. The shadows which usually give an illusion of depth are missing.
A flash unit can be used to reduce both flatness and red eye. You can power a flash unit with a bracket on the body of your camera (also known as a "hot shoe") or with a cable that harmonizes the flash with the flash that is built into your camera.
You can create more depth to your photos by moving the flash away from the camera lens. This way the eye's of your subject won't be illuminated directly. A flash unit that is external can also give you more choices when it comes to aiming the flash. This means that the light bounces off of other objects in the photo to create an effect that is more subtle. Buying a used external flash unit is a great way to save money. Especially if you have bought a new camera and want to supplement some of the cost by buying used equipment.
All flashes are not the same. You can buy flashes in different strengths, keeping in mind that the flash power determines how much space can be lit up. Most digital camera manufacturers will specify the maximum flash range. You can achieve this range when the camera aperture is opened fully.
Objects will appear brighter the nearer that they are to the flash. You can use this effect when you want to separate the background from your subject. However, this can also present some problems if you want to snap a few people or when objects are at varying distances away from the camera. You can solve this problem by posing the subjects so that each of them are the exact same distance away from the flash.
Most digital cameras will have other settings for the flash besides the red eye reduction mode or the automatic mode. You can use the flash-off mode when you want to avoid the use of flash entirely. This allows you to compensate for dim light simply by increasing the opening of the aperture. The fill flash mode is good to use when you have a light source that is very bright behind your subject which would possibly cause your image to appear too dim. The slow sync mode will cause the camera shutter to stay open longer than it normally would. This mode will let the camera absorb some of the ambient light that occurs when the flash has gone off; thereby creating an effect that is more natural.
You can use the flash in creative ways to obtain special effects. The slow sync mode is ideal for when you want the background to be blurred in a picture while at the same time keeping the main object in clear focus. You can achieve this effect by moving the camera a bit after the flash has gone off.
You can see why using flash is crucial to your taking great pictures. If your camera requires an external flash take the time to look around at used units so that you can save yourself a bit of money.
