A Note on Lenses for Digital Cameras
There are two leading components of digital cameras that beat a large region in picture character the picture detector and the lens. Buy the best that you can afford, keeping in mind that better quality lenses will give you the most out of your digital experience. This means: buy used when and if you can!
You can get lenses in different focal lengths which will then determine the depth of focus as well as the field of view. The longer the lens the better able you'll be to focus on areas that are small but that need focusing that is precise to get a clear image. Keep in mind that longer lenses are more sensitive to movement and that your images will blur if you move the camera during a shoot.
Long lenses are sometimes known as "telephoto lenses". This is because they have a field of view that is reduced and because the images that are produced are magnified when they are compared to lenses that are shorter. At the same time, shorter lenses will produce a field of view that is wider. Lenses that are short are known as "wide angle" lenses.
Normal lenses will create images that are much like what your eyes see. Normal lenses don't have a standard length. This is because the field of view is connected with the image sensor size which captures the image. For traditional 35mm cameras a 50mm lens is normal. However, the digital picture image sensors are smaller than the 35mm film frame. For digital cameras, shorter lenses will capture the same view of field as a 50mm lens when used with a 35mm camera. Most digital cameras will have a function that is known as an optical zoom function. This function will alter the focal length of the lens and are rated as multipliers. For instance, a 3X zoom will either reduce or enlarge a picture by 3 times from the shortest setting to the longest setting.
A digital zoom is available for many cameras. The digital zoom works by cropping the picture and then multiplying the result across all the photosites that are on the image sensor. The digital zoom isn't as good as the optical zoom and should be avoided. You can get the best results when you edit the image using imaging software.
Most digital cameras that are mid range can have lens converters added to them. This will give you the ability to choose options for your digital photography that let you attach different filters and lenses.
As well, most digital cameras will let you use lenses that are made specifically for cameras that use film. However, because of the difference in size between image sensors and film sensors the lenses won't produce the same kind of results as film cameras. You can use a telephoto lens that has been designed for film to get a magnifying effect as well as a wide angle lens which will have reduced effect on your digital camera.
Most lenses are quite costly even when you buy used. Take good care of them by keeping them in cases and by covering them with their caps when you're not using them. You will have to buy extra caps for the lens cases in case you lose them. Lens caps can be bought anywhere and are quite cheap.
A lens hood can be very useful when you want to control the amount of light that enters through the lens. You will get images that have reduced contrast and are great for some outdoor shots.
A lens cleaning kit should be used as little as possible since you want to avoid contact with the lens with your fingers. The oils on your hands can permanently damage the coating on the lens. Wipe off your fingerprints by using a soft cloth but you first need to remove any particles of dust with the blower. Any larger dust pieces should be taken off by using a soft brush.
