Tripods
Tripods are needed if you want to take great pictures. A tripod is useful in a variety of situations when you want to minimize the amount of camera movement which might cause your picture to blur. Buying a used tripod is a great way to have some versatile camera equipment without spending a lot of extra money.
You will notice blurring in pictures that are taken with long exposures with low light conditions. It becomes very evident when the picture is enlarged. The smallest movement of the camera can cause blurring.
If you support the camera you can reduce the amount of movement. Using a tripod will give you the best support; however you can also keep your camera still by using objects such as tree trunks or the frames of doors. A monopod can be used outside when a tripod is either too awkward or heavy to set up.
There are many different tripods to choose from in all price ranges. An expensive tripod will be made of materials that are light, such as carbon fiber. You can also buy expensive, durable tripods made from carbon fiber that are stronger than alloy or aluminum. Costly tripods often will come with mechanisms that offer quick release so that you adjust the tripod legs as well as the mount for the camera. This is a great reason to buy used if you want this type of functionality with your tripod.
Every tripod will have three different heights: minimum, maximum, and collapsed. The maximum height will allow you to use your camera in a standing position that is comfortable for you. You most likely won't need a tripod that is higher than this. If you are doing a lot of close-up photography the minimum height will be an important measure for you. Keep in mind that you can buy extensions to add to the head if you want to bring the camera up close to the tripod base. Collapsed height is important because it will determine the portability of the tripod. A compact tripod will be easier for you to carry around.
Most tripods will have a center column where you connect the head of the tripod. The center column can then be used for finely tuning the height of the tripod. Some tripods will let you tilt the camera down to the ground if you're doing any close-up work. You will want to choose a tripod that has a hook on the center column so that you can hang objects for added weight and stability.
The head of the tripod is where you'll attach your camera. The tripod head will allow you to swivel the camera or move it up and down. You can achieve this motion with two head types: the ball head and the three-way pan tilt.
The traditional head of the tripod is the three-way pan tilt. This head has three different axes which are controlled by their own lock and mechanism. The mechanism for locking makes this tripod head great for those times where you need good control of your visual field, however it can be inconvenient when used at other times.
A ball head will allow all three axes to be set and adjusted at the same time, making it easier for you to use. A ball head is more expensive but you'll ignore the high price due to the amount of flexibility you'll get in the movement of your camera.
A monopod is a good when a tripod is awkward to carry. A monopod is a single support for your camera. Many outdoor photographers prefer a monopod to a tripod because they are easier to carry and to set up.
A monopod is easy to use, as easy as focusing and shooting. You can use the monopod when you want to give your camera that added stability for shots of high quality.
You will want to carry your tripod around in a case or with a carrying strap. A case can hold your camera and all your equipment but can also be bulky to take with you. If you only have a small amount of equipment you might want to get a shoulder strap for the tripod.
If you need to have your camera on a perfect level you can attach small bubble levels to the tripod. Some tripods will come with these levels but if not they are inexpensive to buy especially when you look for a used one.
